"What size softener do I need?" There is no answering that without two numbers: your hardness and the size of your household. The tools in this section exist to get those numbers properly, before looking at a single catalog. It is the step salespeople love to skip, because a customer who knows their hardness buys smaller and cheaper.
The two numbers that decide everything
Your hardness, in grains per gallon. Below 3.5 gpg, soft water, case closed. From 3.5 to 7 gpg, moderately hard, a softener is a comfort. From 7 to 10.5 gpg, hard water, protecting the heater starts paying. Above 10.5 gpg, very hard, the question stops being "whether" and becomes "which one". Start with your utility's report — and read the next section, because hardness is the one figure most reports leave out.
Your household, in people, which sets the water used between two regenerations. Crossing the two gives the grain capacity. The working rule: hardness in gpg × 75 gallons per person per day × people × 7 days. A family of four at 12 gpg needs roughly 25,000 grains a week, which is why 32,000 grain units are the volume sellers. Testing it yourself: when and how
Here is the thing about hardness in the United States: it is not a regulated contaminant, so nothing obliges a utility to publish it, and roughly three Consumer Confidence Reports out of four do not. Where the figure exists, this site shows it. Where it does not, you have to measure — and you would want to anyway if you are on a private well, or if your street sits between two sources.
Test strips cost a few dollars and give you a band, which is all you need to decide whether to buy. Watch the unit, because this is where people get caught: many strips are graduated in ppm (mg/L) rather than grains per gallon, and nothing on the packaging makes it obvious. Read 180 and think you are at 180 gpg and you will buy a wildly oversized machine — 180 ppm is 10.5 gpg. The conversion is simple: divide ppm by 17.1.

For setting up a softener rather than just deciding to buy one, strips are marginal: aiming for 1 to 3 gpg on the outlet means reading closer than a color band allows. Take two readings the same day, one at an outdoor spigot (usually unsoftened) and one at a treated tap; the gap is what proves the machine is working.

What these tools do not tell you
High hardness says a softener is useful, not that it is urgent. A new house with a recent water heater can wait a year without risk; an element that is already scaled will not be resurrected by a softener, only protected from here on. And if your concern is what is in the water rather than what it does to your pipes — lead, PFAS, nitrate — then no hardness number will help: that is the job of a certified lab test and of the reverse osmosis section.
