This is the calculation that decides most reverse osmosis purchases, and it comes out more favorably than people expect — provided you set it up properly. The usual trap is comparing $549 for a system against $1.20 for a case: two numbers that are not describing the same thing. Here is the full method, with your own figures.
Step 1: your real consumption
Count over an ordinary week what you drink and what you use in the kitchen — tea, coffee, pasta, soup, baby bottles. The ballparks that keep coming up:
- One person: 1.5 to 3 gallons a week
- A couple: 3 to 5 gallons
- A family of four: 7 to 11 gallons
Take your figure; everything else follows from it. A family of four at 8 gallons a week gets through about 420 gallons a year.
Step 2: what bottled water really costs
Price per gallon in a supermarket runs from about $1.00 for store-brand purified water in gallon jugs to $2.00 and more for branded water in 16-ounce bottles — and single-serve bottles are far worse per gallon than jugs, which is where most households actually lose money. Take the low and high ends against our 420 gallons a year:

Over 10 years, that is $4,200 to $8,400. And that figure ignores three real costs: the hauling (a case a week up from the car), the storage (a permanent square yard of garage or pantry), and the trips if you make dedicated runs for it.
Step 3: what reverse osmosis costs
Purchase: $219 to $549 depending on the architecture. A tanked five-stage starts at $219, a tankless runs around $549.
Consumables: $50 to $80 a year. Prefilters every 6 to 12 months, post-filter annually, membrane every 2 to 3 years. Non-negotiable: a system with saturated cartridges is worse than no system.
Wasted water: $5 to $20 a year. At 2 to 4 gallons to drain per gallon produced on 420 gallons a year, that is 840 to 1,700 gallons, a few dollars at typical municipal rates. It is the line everyone talks about and the one that weighs least.
Electricity: none on a tanked model, marginal on a tankless.
Ten-year total: about $800 for a five-stage, $1,300 for a tankless.

The gap is not close, it is a factor of five to ten. On these assumptions, payback lands in 6 to 16 months against store-brand jugs, and inside a year against branded bottles. It is one of the few calculations on this site where the conclusion does not depend on fragile assumptions.
The one nuance that matters: if you already drink tap water and buy no bottles, this calculation does not apply to you. Reverse osmosis then becomes a water quality purchase rather than a saving, and the question to ask is whether you need it — covered in reverse osmosis or a pitcher filter.
And one thing worth knowing about what you are comparing against: bottled water is regulated by the FDA rather than the EPA, and about two thirds of it is purified municipal tap water to begin with. Paying $1 a gallon for filtered tap water is exactly what a reverse osmosis system does for pennies.

The three ways this calculation goes wrong
Forgetting the consumables. This is the mirror image of the bottled-water sellers' error: a system whose cartridges are never changed is not cheaper, it is unsafe.
Overestimating the wastewater cost. It attracts the objections and weighs a few dollars a year. That is not where the decision is made, in either direction.
Comparing reverse osmosis to tap water. Those are answers to different questions. If your water is fine and only the chlorine bothers you, a $35 carbon filter costs fifteen times less and fixes that exact problem.
To verify your membrane keeps its promises over the years, a TDS meter for about fifteen dollars is enough: rejection should stay above 90%.
