The under-sink filter is the format nobody talks about and yet it strikes the best compromise for a kitchen people actually live in. It does not sit on the faucet, it does not ask you to fill a pitcher, and its cartridge is changed once a year instead of four times. In exchange you have to accept an installation: a tee on the cold line and, depending on the model, a hole for a dedicated faucet. Here is how to choose without being taken in on the one number that matters.
Two families not to confuse
The cartridge under-sink filter — the subject of this page — pushes water through a large block of compressed activated carbon. It holds back chlorine, organic compounds, disinfection byproducts and, on certified blocks, lead. It sends no water to drain, uses no electricity, and leaves the minerals in place.
The under-sink reverse osmosis system forces water through a membrane that rejects more than 90% of everything dissolved, PFAS and nitrate included. It does send water to drain and, in tankless form, needs an outlet. It is a step up in both capability and commitment: the full file is in the reverse osmosis section.
The dividing rule fits on one line: PFAS, nitrate or arsenic on your report means reverse osmosis. A chlorine taste means a cartridge filter. Buying reverse osmosis for a chlorine problem is buying a tractor to fetch bread.
Lead sits in between, and deserves precision: a carbon block certified under NSF/ANSI 53 genuinely reduces it, and that is enough for most homes. Reverse osmosis does more, but the certification is what matters, not the technology.
The one number to compare: cartridge capacity
This is the criterion that settles everything, and the one product pages set in small type. An under-sink filter sold for $70 with a 500-gallon cartridge will cost you more over three years than a $110 model with a 1,000-gallon cartridge. The calculation is trivial: cartridge price divided by capacity.
A household that drinks and cooks with filtered water gets through roughly 500 to 800 gallons a year. Translate from there:
- A 500-gallon cartridge: an annual change at best, in practice sooner.
- A 1,000-gallon cartridge: the binding limit stops being capacity and becomes the stated service life, usually 12 months. That is the comfortable regime.
Always take 20 to 30% off the advertised capacities: they assume lightly chlorinated water and moderate use, two assumptions rarely met together. That is the same method as in my other comparisons.

The "Filter life" column tells the story: 12 months against 3, against 2. The under-sink costs two to three times more up front, then stops costing anything for a year, while the faucet mount asks for a cartridge every quarter. Over three years the gap inverts.
What the table does not say: a faucet mount fits in five minutes and comes off on moving day, which remains unbeatable in a rental. An under-sink assumes you own the place, or at least that you are staying a few years.

My reservation, and it is one of principle: the cartridge is proprietary. This is not the standard 10-inch format, so you depend on the brand for refills. On a filter whose cartridge changes once a year, the risk is lower than on a reverse osmosis system, but it exists.

Installation, honestly
Budget an hour if you have an accessible shutoff under the sink, two if you have to drill the countertop or the sink deck for the dedicated faucet. That drilling is what makes people hesitate, and rightly so: on granite or quartz, do not improvise — have it done.
Three points that avoid the classic incident: shut off the water before taking anything apart, push the tubing fully home into the quick-connects (that is where the leak comes from in nine cases out of ten), and run the tap for five minutes at first commissioning to flush the carbon fines. Grey water in the first glass is normal; in the tenth, it is not.
One last reminder: no carbon filter reduces hardness. If your shower glass keeps going white, the subject is elsewhere — check your hardness and look at a softener.
