Tankless is the only genuine change of architecture that household reverse osmosis has seen in twenty years. Instead of slowly producing RO water and storing it in a 3-gallon bladder tank under the sink, these systems filter on demand, using a pump and a much larger membrane. The result is spectacular on three counts and costly on two others. As always here, we will look at all five.
What you gain: space, wastewater, flow
Space first, and it is the real argument. A classic system is not just the filter housings: it is above all a pressurized tank the size of a stretched basketball, which has to fit next to the P-trap, the cleaning supplies and the trash. Tankless removes that tank. Under a standard 24-inch sink base, the difference is between "it fits if you shove everything aside" and "it fits".
Wastewater next. A five-stage with a tank and no pump sends 3 to 4 gallons to drain per gallon produced; pumped models come down to 2:1, sometimes better. On a gallon and a half a day, you go from about 6 gallons wasted to 3. On the bill the gap is a few dollars a year, and I am not going to sell you an economic revolution. But if the principle of the waste bothered you enough to rule out reverse osmosis altogether, that figure is what changes the decision.
Flow last. A tanked system fills your glass from its stock; when the stock is empty, production resumes at 75 gallons a day, which is a trickle. A 600 GPD membrane produces 600 gallons a day, filling a glass in seconds, continuously. A secondary but real benefit: no standing water. In a tank, RO water sometimes waits days between uses, which is the hygiene weak point of the classic architecture.
What you give up: price and independence
Price. A standard five-stage starts around $219, a decent tankless around $549. You are paying for the pump, the electronics and a membrane three times the size. Over ten years the gap narrows a little thanks to less frequent consumables, but it does not close.
Independence, and this is my real reservation. Tankless systems all run proprietary twist-in cartridges: you change them in three seconds without tools, which is pleasant, but you can only buy them from the manufacturer or its resellers. That is exactly what I have always advised against in my comparison method: the standard 10-inch format will still be sold by anyone in ten years, while a proprietary cartridge depends on one brand's commercial survival. Add that you need a power outlet under the sink, which is far from obvious in an older kitchen.

The "Tank" column at 0 gallons sums up the debate by itself. Note the output gap too: 600 gallons a day against 75, a factor of eight, which is what makes doing without storage possible.
The model I would pick
On this segment the Waterdrop G3P600 ticks the most verifiable boxes. 600 GPD on demand, a 2:1 ratio, a faucet with a built-in TDS indicator, and above all NSF/ANSI 58 and 372 certification: a third-party body verified the TDS reduction and the absence of lead in the wetted materials, not the manufacturer's marketing department. In a market where "8 stages" means nothing checkable, that certification is the one element you can actually verify.
What I will not write, on the other hand, is that I ran it under my sink for two years. My kitchen has one water line and it is already busy; my checklist and its limits are explained in my reviews.

So, who is it for?
Take tankless if your sink cabinet is small, if you have an outlet nearby, if the wastewater was what held you back, or if several people draw water at the same time — a family filling water bottles in the morning will empty a five-stage tank in three minutes.
Stay with a tanked five-stage if you want standard cartridges buyable anywhere and forever, if you have no outlet under the sink, or simply if the $300 gap buys you nothing you care about. The iSpring RCC7 remains my default in that family, and there is nothing dated about it.
