This is by far the most common complaint about tap water, and it is also the easiest to fix. Good news first: that taste is not the sign of dubious water, it is rather the opposite. Still, nobody enjoys a glass that smells like a pool, and there are fixes at every price, including free.

Why your water smells of chlorine

Chlorine is added to drinking water for one simple, non-negotiable reason: to prevent bacterial recontamination between the treatment plant and your tap. Between the two there are sometimes dozens of miles of pipe, storage tanks and hours of travel. The residual disinfectant is the only safeguard along that route, and federal rules require systems to maintain one.

Three things explain why some people taste it and others do not.

Where you sit on the system. The residual falls along the route. Living near a re-chlorination point means water carrying more of it than the neighborhood next door.

Water temperature. Chlorine is far more noticeable at 70 °F than at 45 °F. That is why the same glass seems fine straight from the tap in winter and undrinkable in August.

Your own sensitivity. The perception threshold varies enormously between people, by a factor of ten. If you are the only one in the house who notices it, you are not imagining things — you simply have a better nose.

A word on the more persistent "pool" smell: it usually comes from chloramine. Many large American utilities deliberately switched from free chlorine to chloramine years ago, because it holds further into the distribution network and forms fewer disinfection byproducts. It is more persistent than free chlorine and does not leave by standing the water out, which matters for what follows. Your report names which one your utility uses.

The free fix, and its limits

Fill a pitcher and leave it in the fridge for an hour or two, uncovered or under a cloth. Free chlorine is volatile and partly escapes. The cold does the rest by dulling the perception.

It genuinely works, and it is what I suggest trying before buying anything. Three limits, though. It does nothing against chloramine, so if your water smells of pool rather than bleach, the result will disappoint. It requires planning ahead, which is incompatible with a spontaneous glass of water. And water left out loses its protection: keep it no more than 24 hours, refrigerated, in a clean container.

The fixes that solve it

All of them rest on activated carbon, which adsorbs chlorine with formidable efficiency. This is not exotic technology, it is first-year chemistry, and that is exactly why the results are dependable.

One caveat that matters if your utility uses chloramine: standard carbon handles it far less well than free chlorine. Look for catalytic carbon, which is made for it — a detail worth checking on the product page.

What about the shower?

Now the three warnings, because this shelf is one of the least honest in online retail.

It does nothing about hardness. Nothing. Half these products are sold as "anti-scale shower filters": that is false, KDF does not remove calcium. Your glass door spotting and the tight skin caused by hardness will not shift a millimeter. If that is your problem, you want a softener, and your hardness is the starting point.

Avoid the "20-stage" and "vitamin C" claims. The shelf overflows with $25 heads full of colored beads, germanium and negative ions. None of those correspond to any test method. The only useful markers are genuine KDF content and, where it exists, NSF/ANSI 177, which is the shower filter standard.

It is expensive for what it is, and the cartridge is proprietary and annual. If chlorine does not bother you in the shower, do not buy this: half of people notice nothing.

What does not work, whatever you read

Boiling the water. Boiling drives off some free chlorine, but it simultaneously concentrates everything that does not evaporate, hardness included. For a glass of water it is a bad idea plus an energy bill.

Pebbles, ceramic beads and "structuring" gadgets. No demonstration of any effect on chlorine. Activated carbon costs less and works.

Lemon. It masks the taste, it removes nothing. Not illegitimate — let us just call it what it is.

A water softener. It swaps calcium for sodium and does not touch chlorine. If you have both problems, that is two machines: the softener section handles scale, this page handles taste.

When the taste hides something else

Chlorine is benign. Two signals do deserve to take you off this page.

A metallic taste, or water that runs discolored after sitting. That points at the plumbing rather than the treatment. In an older building the lead question is on the table, and it is a reverse osmosis subject, not an activated carbon one — and worth a certified test at your own tap, since lead is picked up in your pipes rather than at the plant.

PFAS or nitrate near their limits on your report. They have no taste, no smell, and they pass straight through activated carbon. Again, only reverse osmosis answers. Your city's report shows both.

And if your shower glass keeps going white despite a filter that works perfectly on taste, that is normal: no activated carbon holds back calcium. Check your hardness — that is an entirely different file.
