Filtration is the middle road: more serious than a pitcher forgotten at the back of the fridge, less involved than reverse osmosis under the sink. For $35 to $110, an activated carbon filter takes out chlorine, the taste that comes with it, microplastics and — on the certified ones — lead. It is what I recommend first to anyone who finds their water "not great" without having an actual health problem.

Because that is the real question: is your water bad, or just unpleasant? Most American tap water meets its federal limits; what sends people to the bottled water aisle is usually the chlorine taste, and against chlorine, activated carbon is unbeatable on results per dollar.

If your utility's report shows lead, PFAS, nitrate or arsenic near their limits, though, you are in the wrong aisle: that calls for reverse osmosis. And if your problem is scale furring up the house, no filter will touch it — head for a softener.

My faucet filter picks

The faucet mount is my preferred format in simple filtration: nothing to do daily, a real flow rate, and a cartridge that lasts months where a pitcher wants a new one every four weeks. Two models stand out; I should say I have not run them for months at home, and my selection method is explained in my reviews.

The straightforward one: the PUR PLUS faucet mount screws on in five minutes without tools, with a lever to switch between filtered and running water, which spares the cartridge for drinking water. Around $34, and — this is the part that matters — it is NSF certified for lead reduction, which is rare at this price.

One thing to check on any faucet mount: whether it fits your faucet. Pull-down sprayers and some flat spouts cannot take a screw-on filter. Check before ordering — it is the number one reason these get returned.

Pitcher, faucet, under-sink: the three formats

The pitcher stays useful in two cases: a short-term rental, and the office. Anywhere else its apparent economy evaporates once you count monthly cartridges, and its upkeep discipline is its weak point — a forgotten cartridge becomes an incubator. The under-sink filter puts a bigger cartridge below the countertop, plumbed into the existing faucet or a small dedicated one. Tidier, longer-lived, a little pricier and a little more technical to fit. It is the logical step before reverse osmosis, without the wastewater or the tank. What filtration does not do

Let's be clear about the limits, because filter marketing loves a grey area. Activated carbon does not hold nitrate, does not hold hardness (your kettle will keep going white), and does not "structure" or "energize" anything at all, whatever the sellers of magic pebbles claim. It does hold chlorine, organic compounds, microplastics, disinfection byproducts, and — on certified blocks — lead. That is already a lot, provided you change cartridges on time: a saturated filter releases what it has accumulated.

On PFAS, be precise: a plain carbon block reduces some PFAS compounds, unevenly and only while it is fresh. If PFOA or PFOS show up above their federal limit in your report, reverse osmosis is the answer, not a faucet filter.
