A reverse osmosis system is a membrane so fine that almost nothing but water molecules gets through. Lead, PFAS, nitrate, arsenic, disinfection byproducts, chlorine, microplastics — and incidentally the calcium — all stay on the other side. Budget $200 to $550 for an under-sink unit with its own faucet, and drinking water that owes very little to bottled, for pennies a gallon.
This is the most thorough machine on the site, which is exactly why the right question comes first: do you need it? If your only complaint is a chlorine taste, a $40 carbon filter fixes that. Worth checking first: what your own utility reported. If PFOA, PFOS, arsenic or nitrate show up near their federal limit, that is the argument for RO. If everything is well inside its limit and the water simply tastes of chlorine, you are paying for a machine you do not need.

My reverse osmosis picks
The under-sink market is dominated by five-stage systems on the standard American format: sediment and carbon prefilters, membrane, post-filter, pressurized tank. Three units stand out, and I will say up front that none of them has run under my own sink — my kitchen has one water line, and I explain in my reviews how I work without a test bench.
The safe choice: the iSpring RCC7 is the one I would pick first. Five stages, a 75 GPD membrane (far more than a household drinks), a 3.2-gallon tank, and above all standard 10-inch cartridges: in ten years you will still find compatible consumables anywhere, without depending on the brand.

If the cabinet is small: the Waterdrop G3P600 belongs to another family, the tankless systems. Wastewater: let's be straight about it
This is THE standard criticism of reverse osmosis, and it is half right. To produce one gallon of RO water, the membrane sends the concentrate down the drain: on the simple models above, budget 2 to 4 gallons to drain per gallon filtered. Put like that, it sounds outrageous. Put against real use, much less so: a family drinking and cooking with a gallon and a half of RO water a day sends 3 to 6 gallons to the drain, about one toilet flush. On an annual water bill, the order of magnitude is a few dollars.
So it is not a financial argument. If the waste bothers you on principle — and that is a fair position — pumped systems bring the ratio down toward 1:1, at a higher purchase price. That is precisely the tankless argument, which I go through in the comparisons.
Installation and upkeep: what you are in for
An under-sink install is within reach of a careful homeowner: a tee on the cold line, a hole drilled in the countertop or sink for the dedicated faucet (the most nerve-racking moment, take my word for it), and a drain saddle for the reject line. Budget 2 to 3 hours the first time, reading the instructions twice rather than once.
That drilling is what stops most people, and it is a perfectly legitimate reason to hand the job over. On a granite or quartz countertop it stops being advice and becomes a necessity: the bit and the technique are not something you improvise.

Maintenance is the part product pages play down: prefilters every 6 to 12 months, membrane every 2 to 3 years, post-filter once a year. Budget $50 to $80 a year in consumables. An RO system whose cartridges are never changed becomes a bacteria farm, and that is the one genuine way to waste this purchase. The safeguard fits in a pocket: a TDS meter for about fifteen dollars tells you in three seconds whether the membrane is still holding — look for more than 90% rejection between the tap and the RO water.
If your water is hard, a softener upstream extends membrane life considerably: scale is its first enemy.
Should you remineralize?
RO water carries very few minerals, which fuels an endless argument. My position, in two sentences: the bulk of your calcium and magnesium comes from food rather than water, so drinking RO water is not a problem for a healthy person eating normally. If the flat taste bothers you, a remineralization cartridge adds about thirty dollars and settles it.
