A pitcher filter and a reverse osmosis system answer the same wish — better drinking water — by completely different means. One costs $39 and improves the taste; the other costs ten times more and removes almost everything. In between, the faucet mount plays the middle. This guide compares the three honestly, with numbers, so you buy the right level of treatment rather than the most expensive or the best advertised.

What each one actually removes

The pitcher ($30 to $45 plus cartridges) works on activated carbon and ion-exchange resin. It holds chlorine well, so the taste, and — on the certified versions only — lead. On PFAS, nitrate and arsenic, retention is weak to none. And a cartridge forgotten for three months in the pitcher does more harm than good: saturated wet carbon is an excellent growing medium.

One distinction that matters more than any other on this shelf: the standard Brita filter is certified NSF/ANSI 42 — chlorine and taste. The Elite is certified 53, which is the lead standard. Same pitcher, different cartridge, entirely different claim.

The faucet mount ($34 to $60) uses a denser carbon block with a real flow rate: chlorine, taste, disinfection byproducts, and lead on NSF/ANSI 53 certified models. It is the best result-per-effort ratio for water that is already decent, and the main subject of the filtration section. What it does not do: nitrate, which passes through carbon as if it were not there, and PFAS, which it reduces only partly and only while fresh.

Reverse osmosis ($200 to $550) pushes water through a membrane that rejects more than 90% of everything dissolved: PFAS, lead, nitrate, arsenic, disinfection byproducts, pharmaceuticals, microplastics, and the calcium along the way. It is the only one of the three that treats genuinely problematic water. In exchange: an under-sink installation, mandatory maintenance, and 2 to 4 gallons to drain per gallon filtered on simple models.

The real cost over 3 years

Purchase price inverts the hierarchy people think they know. Over three years, for a household that drinks and cooks:

  • Pitcher: $39 to buy, but a cartridge every two months at about $12, so roughly $250 over 3 years. The "cheap" option is not that cheap.
  • Faucet mount: $34 to $60 to buy, cartridges every three months, so $200 to $260 over 3 years. Similar to the pitcher, for better filtration and nothing to do daily.
  • Reverse osmosis: $200 to $550 to buy, $50 to $80 of consumables a year, so $350 to $790 over 3 years. The most expensive in absolute terms, but the only one comparable to bottled water — which it beats decisively: a family buying two cases a week spends $900 to $1,800 over the same period.

In other words: if you already buy bottled water, reverse osmosis is financially rational and it is not close. If you drink from the tap and just want it better, the pitcher and the faucet mount sit in the same price band, and the faucet mount wins in use.

My decision grid

Your water is fine but chlorinated (the most common case in a city): faucet mount, or a pitcher if you are in a short rental. Reverse osmosis would be a sledgehammer for a fly.

Your report shows PFAS above 4 ppt, arsenic near 10 ppb, or nitrate near 10 ppm: reverse osmosis, without hesitation. It is the only one of the three that genuinely treats those.

Lead is your concern: this one is subtler. Most lead is picked up in your own service line and household plumbing rather than at the treatment plant, so what matters is a filter at the tap you drink from. An NSF/ANSI 53 certified faucet filter or pitcher does the job; reverse osmosis does it more thoroughly. What will not help is anything certified 42 only.

You buy cases of bottled water every week: reverse osmosis too, for purely economic and logistical reasons. No more carrying.

Your problem is scale in the house: none of the three. A pitcher will not save your water heater, and neither will reverse osmosis — it only treats its own dedicated faucet. You want a softener, and the first step is checking your hardness.

The advice that follows is worth more than the choice of pitcher: if lead is any part of your reason for filtering, fit the Elite filter rather than the standard one. Buying a few at a time also removes the temptation to stretch a tired cartridge another three weeks, which is how people end up drinking through saturated carbon.
