Salt is the one expense that recurs for the whole life of the machine, and the one nobody prices before buying. A household of four on hard water goes through 8 to 12 bags of 40 lb a year, so $80 to $130. Over fifteen years that is more than the softener cost. Worth knowing what goes in the brine tank, because the wrong salt slowly damages what the right machine was supposed to protect.
The three formats, and which to take
Pellets. The standard format and the one I recommend without hesitation. Compressed pucks that dissolve steadily as the brine rebuilds. Their consistency is the point: they do not pack down and do not bridge above the water line.
Crystals (solar salt). Cheaper per pound, and fine on units that specifically ask for them, but with a known flaw: they tend to cake and form a salt bridge, the solid crust that sets above the brine. The machine thinks it has salt, the tank looks full, and yet nothing is dissolving. You find out three weeks later, when the kettle starts going white again.
Blocks. Two large bricks sitting in the tank. Clean and easy to carry, but reserved for compact softeners designed for them. Do not improvise: in a standard brine tank, a block dissolves poorly.
Put simply: pellets by default, crystals if your manual asks for them, blocks only if the manufacturer designed for them.
Purity: the one number to check
On the bag, look for the sodium chloride purity. The useful standard is 99.5% minimum, and good salts state 99.9%. What is left is insolubles: sand, clay, mineral residue. They do not evaporate — they settle at the bottom of the brine tank, foul the intake screen and eventually gum up the valve injector, which is the most annoying part in the whole machine to strip down.
One point I am categorical about: never use rock salt sold for de-icing, or pool salt. The first carries anti-caking agents and a lot of insolubles; the second is not formulated for ion exchange. "Water softener salt" is not a marketing invention on this one; it is simply clean salt.
Salt with a resin-cleaning additive (usually a few dollars more) genuinely helps on iron-bearing water and is marginal everywhere else. Do not pay the premium on principle.
What it really costs, and where to buy
Prices run around $8 to $12 for a 40 lb bag. Consumption depends on three things: your hardness, how many people live there, and the valve type. A metered valve uses salt on real consumption; a timer valve regenerates even while you are on vacation, which explains much of the gap between two neighboring households. If you do not know your hardness yet, check your report — and expect it to be missing, since hardness is not a regulated contaminant.
Annual ballpark, for a properly set metered valve:
- 2 people, 10 gpg: 4 to 6 bags, so $40 to $70
- 4 people, 15 gpg: 8 to 11 bags, so $80 to $120
- 5 people and up, above 20 gpg: 13 to 18 bags, so $130 to $200
On where to buy, let's be honest: the big-box hardware store is usually cheaper per pound. Ordering online makes sense when you have no trunk space, when you live upstairs, or when you simply have no wish to carry 80 lb from the cart to the car and then from the car to the basement.

One note on potassium chloride. It is sold alongside sodium pellets, costs roughly three to four times as much, and does the same job while adding potassium instead of sodium. Worth it if someone in the house is on a strict low-sodium diet — otherwise the cheaper answer is to keep one unsoftened tap in the kitchen for drinking and cooking.
Three habits that extend the machine's life
Do not fill the tank to the brim. Salt packs down and bridges. Aim for two thirds, and let the level drop well down before topping up.
Break the crust once a year. A broom handle, ten seconds, checking that no hard plate is floating above the brine. It is the single most cost-effective maintenance act on a softener.
Clean the bottom of the tank every two or three years. You will find a grey sludge: the accumulated insolubles. Very pure salt reduces that deposit without eliminating it.
And once a year, check the outlet hardness with test strips: the target stays 1 to 3 gpg. Drift upward signals a salt shortage, a bridge, or tired resin. The setting method is in what size water softener do you need.
