What hardness actually is

Hardness measures the calcium and magnesium dissolved in your water. American equipment is sized in grains per gallon (gpg); laboratory reports usually give ppm or mg/L as calcium carbonate. To convert, divide ppm by 17.1.

The more limestone the water crossed before reaching your tap, the higher the number. Hardness is above all a matter of local geology: the granite of New England gives soft water, the limestone aquifers of Texas, Arizona and the upper Midwest give very hard water, and there is nothing dirty or dangerous about any of it. Scale is not a health problem; it is an equipment and comfort problem.

The USGS scale everyone works from:

  • Under 3.5 gpg (60 ppm): soft. No notable scaling. No anti-scale treatment to consider.
  • 3.5 to 7 gpg (60–120 ppm): moderately hard. A few spots on fixtures, nothing serious.
  • 7 to 10.5 gpg (120–180 ppm): hard. Scaling becomes real: water heater, washer and kettle first in line.
  • Over 10.5 gpg (180 ppm): very hard. Household equipment visibly wears faster. Anaheim, one of the cities whose utility does publish the figure, reports 18.6 gpg.

Why the figure is so often missing

Here is the thing that surprises people, and it is the single most useful fact on this page: hardness is not a regulated contaminant.

The Safe Drinking Water Act sets enforceable limits for things that affect health — lead, arsenic, nitrate, PFAS, bacteria. Hardness affects your water heater, not your body, so no federal rule requires a utility to measure it or to publish it. Consumer Confidence Reports carry what the law requires plus whatever the utility chooses to add, and hardness lands squarely in the optional column. In practice, roughly three reports out of four leave it out entirely.

That is why this site shows hardness where it exists and says plainly when it does not, rather than filling the gap with a regional average. An average across a county tells you about the geology; it does not tell you what comes out of your faucet, and buying a softener on it is how people end up with the wrong size.

Two further limits apply even where the number exists. Some systems draw from several sources, so hardness varies between neighborhoods or with the season as the utility switches supply. And if your water comes from a private well, no utility report applies at all — around 13% of American households are in that position, and for them measuring is the only option.

Getting the number yourself

The fix is cheap. Test strips cost a few dollars and give you a band in thirty seconds, which is all you need to decide whether to buy.

One trap when ordering, and it is common: many strips are graduated in ppm rather than grains per gallon, and the listing photo rarely makes it clear. A reading of 180 on that kind of strip is 10.5 gpg, not 180 — two whole hardness classes apart, and enough to make you buy a wildly oversized machine.

What your hardness actually changes

Under 7 gpg, forget the anti-scale aisle: your issue, if any, is taste, and it is treated for $35 to $60 with a carbon faucet filter. Immediate saving: the price of a softener you do not need.

Between 7 and 10.5 gpg, protecting the water heater starts to make financial sense, especially on an electric tank. This is the case-by-case zone: what size water softener do you need walks through the reasoning and the sizing.

Above 10.5 gpg, a softener repays in a few years on avoided repairs and wasted energy alone: $600 to $1,200 to buy plus $80 to $130 of salt a year, against a water heater that lasts twice as long.

One last reminder, because part of the market keeps this deliberately blurry: hardness says nothing about whether your water is safe. Very hard water can be excellent to drink; soft water can carry lead or PFAS. For drinking water — taste, lead, PFAS, nitrate — the answers are in filtration and reverse osmosis, not in a softener. That is exactly why your city's report shows the health parameters alongside hardness: scale and safety are two separate questions, and you need both answers to decide.
