The right question is not "what is the best water softener?" but "which softener for MY water and MY household?". The same unit is oversized in Seattle and undersized in Phoenix. So this guide starts from the only number that matters — your hardness in grains per gallon — works out the grain capacity, then the model.
If you do not know your hardness yet, start there. Check your utility's report first, and be ready for it not to be listed: hardness is not a regulated contaminant, so roughly three reports out of four skip it entirely. A test strip settles it for a few dollars.

Reading your hardness: the gpg scale
Hardness measures dissolved calcium and magnesium. American equipment is sized in grains per gallon; lab reports often give ppm (mg/L as calcium carbonate). To convert, divide ppm by 17.1. The USGS scale everyone works from:
- Under 3.5 gpg (60 ppm): soft water. No reason to soften. Much of the Pacific Northwest and New England.
- 3.5 to 7 gpg (60–120 ppm): moderately hard. A softener is a comfort purchase: fewer spots on the fixtures, but your water heater is not at risk.
- 7 to 10.5 gpg (120–180 ppm): hard water. The zone where a softener starts paying for itself. Scaling becomes measurable, appliances age faster.
- Over 10.5 gpg (180 ppm): very hard. Much of the Southwest, Texas, Florida and the upper Midwest. Here the unit pays back on avoided repairs alone. Anaheim, to take one city whose utility does publish the figure, reports 18.6 gpg.
Remember the practical threshold: below 7 gpg, keep your money. If your problem is the taste, that is a filtration matter, not a softening one.
Sizing the capacity: the method
A softener stores its exchange capacity in its resin, rated in grains. The harder your water and the more your household uses, the faster that reserve runs down and the more often the unit regenerates — using salt and water each time. Sizing looks for the balance: a regeneration every 5 to 7 days.
The calculation, on the standard basis of 75 gallons per person per day:
hardness (gpg) × 75 × people × 7 days = grains needed per week
Worked through: a family of four at 12 gpg needs 12 × 75 × 4 × 7 = 25,200 grains a week. That is exactly why 32,000 grain units are the volume sellers — they cover that with margin. The brackets that follow from it:
- 1 to 2 people, up to 15 gpg: 24,000 grains.
- 3 to 5 people, 7 to 20 gpg: 32,000 grains. The market standard, and by far the best seller, because it covers the typical family on hard water.
- 5 people and up, or above 20 gpg: 48,000 grains.
Undersizing is the classic bargain-unit trap: a 24,000 grain unit for a family of four on very hard water will regenerate every other day, and the salt bill wipes out the saving on purchase. Oversizing costs less to run but has its own limit: a wildly oversized softener regenerates so rarely that water sits in the resin, which is a hygiene problem. For a vacation home, stay small and use a valve that forces a periodic regeneration.

The Fleck 5600SXT 32,000 grain is my default for a household of three to five between 7 and 20 gpg. Its valve is the industry reference worldwide: metered regeneration, parts available everywhere, and any plumber can set it. At around $699 it is not the cheapest, but it is the machine still being repaired fifteen years from now.
The Fleck 5600SXT 48,000 grain is the same machine one row up the sizing table: five people and more, or above 20 gpg. Around $849. The only bad use of this model would be buying it "to be safe" when the 32,000 was enough — the extra resin does nothing and stretches the interval between regenerations.

Do not forget the outlet setting
One last point, usually neglected at commissioning: a softener should not run down to 0 gpg. Fully softened water is aggressive to metal plumbing and brings no extra comfort. You set the blend — the partial bypass — to land at 1 to 3 gpg on the outlet, which protects the heater while keeping the water balanced.
Take two readings the same day to check it: one at an outdoor spigot, which is usually unsoftened, and one at a treated tap. The gap is what proves the machine is doing its job.

That outlet setting is part of what an installer dials in at commissioning, along with the bypass and the first salt fill. It is also the most common reason to hand the job over: sizing is decided on paper, but commissioning is where it goes wrong in practice.
