This is the question I get most often, and I understand why: a $70 box that clips onto the pipe, no salt, no maintenance, no plumbing, against a $700 softener you have to install and feed salt for the rest of its life. If it worked, the choice would be easy. Here is what I think after buying one of those boxes myself, years ago, before I understood what I was looking at.
The test that settles it in three minutes
There is one check anyone can run, and it is decisive. Measure hardness before and after the device.
Take hardness test strips, measure at a tap upstream of the box, then at a tap downstream. On an ion-exchange softener you will read 18 gpg on one side and 2 gpg on the other. On a magnetic or electronic descaler you will read the same value on both sides. Every time.

And that is not a fault in the device: it is its principle. These boxes remove nothing from the water. They have no resin, no salt, no membrane, no drain. Nothing comes out, so the calcium stays, so the hardness does not move. It is arithmetic before it is physics: a process that discharges nothing cannot subtract matter from water.
What the manufacturers actually promise
Read their packaging carefully, it is instructive: the serious ones never say "reduces hardness". They write "changes the crystal structure of the scale", "converts calcite to aragonite", "prevents scale from adhering". The promise is not to remove the calcium, but to make it precipitate in a less adherent form.
That hypothesis is not absurd in itself, and some laboratory work describes an effect on crystal nucleation under specific conditions: a given flow, a given temperature, a given composition. The problem is the move to the real world. Results are poorly reproducible from one installation to another, the supposed effect fades within a foot or so of the device, and there is no standard today that qualifies these products the way NSF/ANSI 44 qualifies a softener. At the scale of a house — variable flows, long pipe runs, a water heater at 140 °F — nobody has demonstrated a consistent benefit.
My own experience is worth what it is worth, which is a testimonial rather than proof: at 18 gpg, my box changed nothing about the kettle, the shower door or the water heater element I ended up replacing. The softener I fitted afterwards changed everything in a week.
The special case of "salt-free softeners"
Watch the vocabulary, it is deliberately slippery. Three very different things hide under the "salt-free softener" label:
Magnetic and electronic boxes, which we have just covered. They do not soften, and the word "softener" on the packaging is a misuse of the term.
Template-assisted crystallization systems (TAC), using ceramic or polymer media. These do have a real physico-chemical mechanism and real laboratory results on scale formation. They still do not reduce hardness, but they genuinely limit adhesion inside pipes and heaters. They cost several hundred dollars and need media replacement every few years. It is an honest category, provided you know what you are buying: no salt, no electricity, no drain — but no drop in hardness either, so still white spots on fixtures and glass.
Actual resin softeners, which sometimes wear the label out of pure commercial opportunism while consuming salt. That one is simply false advertising.
What actually works, depending on your problem
You want to protect the water heater and appliances, and be done with the spotting. An ion-exchange softener is the only thing that lowers hardness for a whole house. It is a commitment and it costs salt, but it is the only process whose effect can be measured at the tap. Sizing is explained in what size water softener do you need.

You only want less scale in your glass. A reverse osmosis system takes hardness out of drinking water, along with everything else. It does not protect the house, only its own faucet.
Your water is actually not that hard and it is the taste that bothers you. A common case, and a cheap one: a carbon filter around $35. Before buying anything, check your report — and if hardness is not listed, which is usual, test a strip. Below 7 gpg the anti-scale aisle is simply not for you.
You are renting and cannot install anything. No box will fix it, but descaling the kettle with vinegar and keeping a squeegee in the shower costs three dollars and does more.
Your skin feels tight after a shower. Watch the diagnosis here, because two causes get confused and an entire product category profits from it. If it is hardness, only a softener will change anything, and no "anti-scale" shower head will manage it.
